July 19, 2024 -- Yonsei University has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with IBM for the 'MOU for Cooperation on the Bio-Quantum Initiative'. This agreement aims to strengthen collaboration between the two institutions in the research and development of quantum computing within the field of biotechnology.

Key aspects of the agreement include: the support for the development of quantum algorithms and advisory on technology projects; the promotion of knowledge exchange through workshops, seminars, and conferences; the development of educational programs and materials for training talent in quantum computing and biotechnology, and; the establishment of a joint operational committee along with regular meetings to facilitate collaborative activities in quantum computing for biotechnology.

Through this collaboration, Yonsei University anticipates contributing to the development of Korea's quantum ecosystem and achieving significant outcomes in biotechnology, particularly in protein structure-based drug discovery and development.

On April 25, the Korean government announced the 'Quantum Initiative', a national strategy to lead the quantum era and enhance global competitiveness in quantum science and technology. This MOU is expected to play a significant role in supporting this national strategy.

President Dong-Sup Yoon highlighted that the agreement establishes a strong foundation for Yonsei University to advance its research and educational capabilities in quantum computing and biotechnology at an international level. He emphasized the university’s commitment to generating groundbreaking research outcomes and improving human lives through a close partnership with IBM.

Jay Gambetta, IBM Fellow and Vice President of IBM Quantum, noted that Yonsei University is the second academic institution globally to house an IBM Quantum System One. He expressed enthusiasm for the initiation of the Bio-Quantum Initiative and underscored IBM's dedication to advancing Korea's quantum ecosystem and accelerating the development of quantum algorithms and industrial applications in collaboration with Yonsei University.

Yonsei University plans to install an IBM Quantum System One on its International Campus in the second half of this year, marking the second instance of such a system being installed at a university worldwide.

Additionally, Yonsei University is a member of the 'IBM Quantum Network', a global community dedicated to advancing quantum computing and exploring practical applications. The network includes over 250 institutions, such as Fortune 500 companies, startups, academic institutions, and research organizations.
