Q*Bird, Eurofiber and Single Quantum Partnership Awarded €1 Million Grant for Quantum Key Distribution Project

Industry / Press Release March 5, 2025

March 04, 2025 -- Q*Bird, Single Quantum and Eurofiber have been awarded a €1 million subsidy to push the boundaries of Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) technology, further securing digital communications. Announced at the 2025 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

This initiative is part of the QUEST project, funded by the Kansen voor West program and the European Regional Development Fund (EFRO). The project will establish QKD connections across two of Eurofiber’s primary data centers in the Randstad region.

The project marks a significant milestone in the development of Measurement Device Independent (MDI) quantum key distribution technology, offering secure, tamper-proof communication between users. By leveraging Eurofiber’s extensive fiberoptic network, the collaboration will allow customers to access QKD secured lit services, ensuring robust data security for critical applications, across multiple local quantum networks.

By partnering with Single Quantum, a specialist in quantum detection systems, Q*Bird aims to scale MDI-QKD for broader commercial adoption. The project will establish a network of interconnected QKD systems, enabling encrypted communication between users in Amsterdam and Rotterdam. This marks a crucial step toward the realization of an ultra-secure quantum internet.

The QUEST project will provide businesses and public organizations with a robust security layer, ensuring their data remains protected against cyber threats, including those posed by future quantum computers. By leveraging Eurofiber’s extensive fiber optic network, Q*Bird’s technology delivers next-generation encryption capabilities to industries requiring high levels of confidentiality.

This partnership underscores Q*Bird’s leadership in quantum-secured networking and highlights the transformative potential of QKD. The project’s success will set a new benchmark for secure communications, reinforcing the Netherlands’ position as a frontrunner in quantum technology innovation.
