Physicists from the Australian National University have developed a new technology that can make light-based quantum technologies more accurate and efficient. Their multiport interferometer device based on a metasurface can provide on-the-fly error-checking capabilities. This tiny unit can be built into the quantum technology, so the device may be particularly useful in portable quantum systems, or on satellites. Experiments have shown that this device can successfully characterize the similarity of the photons’ spatial mode, polarization, and spectra.
