Euro-Q-Exa: Expansion Phase Begins

Industry October 9, 2026

October 1, 2026 -- The European quantum computer Euro-Q-Exa at the LRZ continues to grow: A new expansion stage with 150 qubits will complement the existing system in the future and expand the available computing capacity for research and innovation in Europe.

The expansion of the European quantum computer Euro-Q-Exa at the Leibniz Supercomputing Centre (LRZ) has started as planned. In addition to the already available system with 54 qubits, a second expansion stage with 150 qubits will soon be added. Like System 1, the new system is also based on superconducting quantum technology and will be installed and put into operation at the LRZ by the manufacturer IQM Quantum Computers.

In the coming weeks, teams from IQM and LRZ will set up the system step by step, cable it and cool it down. It will then be integrated into the LRZ systems, precisely calibrated and put through its paces before a test phase follows after completion of the technical work. In the course of 2027, the system will be available to users from Germany and Europe.

Researchers at universities and institutes as well as companies can apply for computing time on Euro-Q-Exa free of charge. In Germany, interested users can contact  the LRZ directly with a short concept for the planned research project. Researchers and companies from Europe can access it by applying to the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU).

Since mid-September 2026, more than 37 teams from different disciplines have already been working with Euro-Q-Exa's quantum computing infrastructure.
