NATO Releases Quantum Technology Roadmap

Industry October 1, 2026

September 30, 2026 -- Allies approved a quantum technology roadmap to accelerate the understanding, adoption and integration of quantum technologies across NATO and Allied armed forces, and mitigate potential disruptive risks stemming from strategic competition.

A public summary of the roadmap is released on Tuesday (29 September) - read the roadmap.

The roadmap builds on NATO’s Quantum Strategy approved in 2023, and focuses on quantum computing, quantum communication, and quantum sensing. How quantum technologies interplay with other dual-use technologies such as AI, Space or Next Generation Communication Networks will also be at the centre of NATO’s work.

The Transatlantic Quantum Community (TQC) and its Industry Network will play an important role to support the implementation of activities identified in the roadmap through close cooperation with both industry and academia.

The TQC last met in Washington D.C. on 24-25 September 2026. Discussions focused on how advances in quantum computing could affect secure communications, critical infrastructure, intelligence, strategic stability and crisis decision-making. They also addressed the implications of AI-Quantum convergence for defence and security. Furthermore, they explored how to harness quantum technologies for Positioning and Navigation (PNT), and sensing, notably in light of the Questor 26 experimentation campaign conducted by the NATO Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE) and the TQC Industry Network in La Spezia, Italy, early this month.
