NMI-Q-Initiative for Strengthened Collaboration in Quantum Metrology

Industry / Press Release November 26, 2025

November 25 2025 -- Quantum Technologies promise significant economic and societal advances across numerous fields – from communication and finance to energy supply and healthcare. However, a globally functioning market requires reliable, interoperable, and scalable measurement procedures: without common rules, units, and standards, such procedures cannot be established. International collaboration is therefore essential for the development and application of Quantum Technologies. An important step in this direction was recently achieved with the launch of the NMI-Q initiative.

In mid-October 2025, the G7 countries plus Australia signed a Memorandum of Understanding in Paris, officially launching the initiative. For Germany, the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) in Braunschweig – the national metrology institute – is participating. The goal of the international NMI-Q network is to intensify and expand the collaboration of the participating national metrology institutes to promote the development and application of Quantum Technologies. In doing so, the initiative brings together world-leading expertise and thus makes a significant contribution to building a global Quantum Technology Industry.

Metrological issues in Quantum Technology are to be addressed collaboratively, laying the foundation for international standardization. To this end, the metrology institutes plan regular exchanges with research institutions, standardization organizations, and industry partners regarding market needs and strategic priorities. This includes sharing research data and providing best practices for measurement procedures, which can subsequently be incorporated into internationally recognized standards. Over time, this will help establish a robust quality infrastructure for the emerging Quantum Industry and provide a basis for neutral, independent components and applications.
