Waterloo Quantum Research Gets $16 Million Boost

Industry / Press Release February 4, 2025

January 21, 2025 -- Thirteen University of Waterloo researchers have received $16.2 million for 16 projects advancing quantum science and technology.

Sherry Romanado, on behalf of the Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, along with Professor Alejandro Adem, president of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), announced the funding at the INRS Énergie Matériaux Télécommunications Research Centre in Varennes, Québec.

The National Quantum Strategy (NQS), launched by the Government of Canada, aims to amplify Canada’s significant strengths in quantum research, grow its quantum-ready technologies, companies and talent and solidify Canada ’s global leadership in this area.

NSERC’s Alliance Quantum grants, Alliance Consortia Quantum grants and Alliance International Quantum grants support the implementation of the NQS and aim to address important challenges in quantum science, while supporting the development of quantum technologies including algorithms and encryption, communications, computing, materials, and sensing.

For more than two decades, the University of Waterloo and the Institute for Quantum Computing (IQC) has been a world-leader in quantum research, and this latest round of funding enables Waterloo researchers to further support the NQS mandate.
