Quantum Boost for Wearable Brain Imaging

Industry / Press Release February 10, 2024

February 06, 2024 -- Cerca Magnetics in the UK has won a contract to create a pathway to clinical trials for the Quantum-Enabled Brain Imaging system.

The Cerca brain imaging system uses technology from Nobel-Prize-winning Sir Peter Mansfield Imaging Centre in Nottingham, UK, in conjunction with industrial partners Magnetic Shields Limited and Quspin. It has developed and brought to market the world’s first commercial, fully-integrated device based on optically-pumped magnetometers (OPMs) to detect magnetic fields.

QuSpin miniaturised sensors for the world’s first fully-integrated ‘whole-head’ OPM device. This device measures magnetic fields at 50 locations around the scalp, offering complete, non-invasive brain coverage. The latest results show that this system can track brain activity with millimetre accuracy, and enables critical neuroscientific metrics such as functional connectivity.

This working prototype system is the basis for Cerca’s flagship OPM-MEG brain imaging device. This is an integrated system, combining the world’s best sensors and shielding with the unique IP from the University of Nottingham to form a fully-operational brain imaging system.

The project, funded by the UK government, looks to take this to clinical trials.
