VTT Along in the TeleQuant Consortium to Advance Quantum Communication in Finland
October 03 2025 -- VTT is participating in the newly launched TeleQuant project, a consortium funded by Business Finland under its first Rise to Challenge call, which supports visionary research ideas. The consortium comprises VTT, Aalto University and Tampere University as a coordinator. Business Finland granted a total of 2 million euros funding for the project, of which VTT's share is 749 900 euros.
When the quantum computer becomes a reality, traditional communication protocols may no longer guarantee secure data transfer. On the other hand, Quantum communication research area, based on the principles of quantum mechanics, offers a promising solution to this challenge.
The TeleQuant project benefits from VTT’s expertise on photonics and superconducting and quantum technologies to develop key components for quantum communication.
“The TeleQuant project is expected to strengthen Finland’s resilience in quantum communication and related technologies,” says George Thomas, Research scientist and VTT's Project Manager for TeleQuant.
The research community enthusiastically embraces Business Finland's new funding concept, Rise to Challenges. This initiative supports long-term, up to 5 years, development of highly ambitious research ideas.
“I am eager to see how the TeleQuant consortium's results will revolutionize the quantum communication business sector,” says Anu Kärkkäinen, Research Manager, Quantum Technology at VTT.
